This is what is written in Filipino of the said verse.
1 Corinto 9:27 "Nguni't hinahampas ko ang aking katawan, at aking sinusupil: baka sakaling sa anomang paraan, pagkapangaral ko sa iba, ay ako rin ay itakuwil."
But in English, it is not really hitting your body or penitence which is the right term for this.
1 Corinthians 9:27 But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.
What is the real meaning of this verse anyway?
Again, a question regarding in the Bible should also be found in the Bible.
Because in the Bible, it says that we (God's believers) must seek the book of the LORD. (read Isaiah 34:16)
We must answer now what does Apostle Saint Paul means when he speaks in the verse I KEEP UNDER MY BODY, AND BRING IT UNTO SUBJECTION?
Romans 6:19 "I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness."
We Christians should know that hurting your body as an act of repentance is really against on the teaching of the Bible. This is the proof:
Colossians 2:23 "Which things have indeed a shew of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body; not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh."
The Greek word and meaning of the word neglecting on the said verse is APHEIDIA it means unsparingly severity

This is what you can read in Filipino of the verse 23 of Colossians Chapter 2 in the Bible which is in the New Testament section:
Colossians 2:23 "Ang mga bagay na iya'y katotohanang mayroong anyo ng karunungan sa pagsambang kusa, at sa pagpapakababa, at sa pagpapakahirap sa katawan; nguni't walang anomang kabuluhan laban sa ikalalayaw ng laman."
