‘Umar commanded his son ‘Abd Allah to divorce his wife, but he refused because he loved her. So ‘Umar went to Mohammed, and Mohammed ordered him to divorce her. Abu Dawud vol.3 no.5119 p.1422

The Prophet (may peace be upon him) called on Thabit bin Qais and said (to him): Take a part of her property and separate yourself from her. He asked: Is that right, Apostle of Allah? He said: Yes. He said: I have given her two gardens of min as a dower, and they are already in her possession. The Prophet (may peace be upon him) said: Take them and separate yourself from her." Note that the man got his gardens back after beating his wife and breaking part of her. Abu Dawud vol.2 no.2220 p.600
